Destructible Stages Revealed In First Ever Live STREET FIGHTER V Match

After announcing that next year’s Capcom Cup will be awarding a whopping $500,000 in prize money to the victorious, and then electrifying the crowd with announcement of the return of veteran character, Charlie, to the series, Yoshinori Ono introduced the first ever live look at Street Fighter V yesterday. During the live gameplay session, onlookers scooped the debut of a few interesting new features such as varying “EX meter” quantities, Chun Li’s switch from a charge character to a command-based character, and a “revenge meter” that appears to function similar to the “ultra meter” in Street Fighter IV. We also witnessed the addition of destructible stages– a characteristic that Injustice: Gods Among Us and Dead or Alive players are certainly no strangers to. Feel free to check out the recording of the entire 9-minute live play session for yourself below:

What’s suspiciously not apparent at any momeny during the live session is parrying, an old feature that many Street Fighter veterans have been begging to have returned to the series. Capcom acknowledged the demand for parrying by including it in the newly implemented “Omega Mode” for Ultra Street Fighter IV, so it’s a bit mind-boggling that they didn’t highlight this feature in any fashion at yesterday’s showing. As it stands, there’s no official confirmation that the ability to parry will be in Street Fighter V, and with Capcom continuing to make the series more accessible with each edition, there’s a good chance that it’ll be omitted until future versions of the game come years down the road.

That said, while I’m sure there’s some Street Fighter III: Third Strike hipster out there throwing fierce jabs at his or her bedroom door about this, let’s all try to bear in mind that this game is simply in its alpha stages at the current moment. Nothing’s quite set in stone yet, so as the most dignified and distinguished boxer himself, Dudley, would say: keep it classy!

How is Street Fight V looking to you so far. Would the omission of parrying be a deal breaker for you? Wave-dash into the comments with your thoughts below.
