DELIVER US FROM EVIL Has A New Trailer and It Is Awesome

This morning we saw the release of the new trailer for Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson’s latest, Deliver Us From Evil, and it is awesome. The trailer features a significant amount of new material since the last trailer and all of it looks taut, sophisticated and really freaking scary.

Deliver Us From Evil is based on the book by Ralph Sarchie “Beware the Night.” The cast includes Eric Bana, Olivia Munn, Edgar Ramírez, Sean Harris and Joel McHale. Deliver Us From Evil is the story of New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Bana) who is struggling with his own personal issues. Sarchie begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes and must join forces with a priest, played by Edgar Ramirez, who is schooled in the rituals of exorcism in order to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their city.

When speaking to our own Chris Hardwick at WonderCon, writer/director Derrickson explained why he was excited to take on the project, saying, “I like zombie movies where the audience knows there’s no real vampires, werewolves. Exorcisms are a fact, they really happen… I like that it allows a different kind of fear to enter the audience if you do it properly, because it’s a fear that I think goes deeper than other kinds of genre films, but I also like that it opens the mind to the mysteries of life. And I’m a big believer that horror films are meant to be fun and they’re meant to be a form of escape, as all good entertainment is. But at the same time, they awaken good things in us when they’re good movies and a good horror film, and certainly a good exorcism movie, makes you think that the world is a bit more magical and mysterious than what you’re often told by the powers of the world that we’ve got everything figured out, and I don’t think that’s true, and I like movies that remind me that’s not true.”

After you’ve watched the trailer below, you can read our WonderCon coverage from the Deliver Us From Evil panel, moderated by Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick, here. Deliver Us From Evil opens everywhere July 2, 2014.
