Marvel Gives DEADPOOL a Fresh Start with Skottie Young and Nic Klein

Marvel’s “Fresh Start” relaunch is giving several heroes new ongoing series and a new lease on life later this year. Right now, it’s hard to picture anyone who needs it more than Deadpool. Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth spent years repairing his reputation until he was finally recognized as a hero. However, Wade Wilson reluctantly killed a lot innocent people, and his former friends have been gunning for him since the end of Secret Empire. Now, it’s going to be up to a new creative team to put Deadpool back on track.

Via Polygon, writer Skottie Young and artist Nic Klein are headlining the new Deadpool ongoing series, which will launch shortly before Deadpool 2 arrives in theaters. Young is primarily known as an artist, but he has written comics as well, including Rocket Raccoon for Marvel. The new series will find Deadpool returning to his mercenary roots in a world that no longer has much use for him. However, Deadpool may also be the only one who can stop “a catastrophic threat” heading towards the Earth.

Will saving the world be enough to get the other heroes off Wade’s back? Probably not. However, Young did tell Polygon his run will embrace the humorous tone Deadpool is known for, as well as some of the darker aspects. “I like to write stories that move fast and keep you on the ride,” said Young. “And I like to try and make you laugh while someone his getting their arm broken or head exploded.”

Deadpool #1 will be released on Wednesday, May 2.
