Is Josh Brolin Teasing Cable’s Evil Clone Stryfe for DEADPOOL 2?

Josh Brolin‘s turn as Cable in Deadpool 2 will only be the beginning of his stint in the X-Men movie universe. The X-Force film is finally moving forward, which will once again pair Brolin with Ryan Reynolds‘ Merc with a Mouth. But a newly released pic by Brolin could be hinting that a major X-Force villain won’t be waiting around to make his debut. Brolin posted the following photo on his Instagram account with the following message: “Oh my God, wait until you see ‘Deadpool’. It’s SO funny!!!’

Now, it’s not entirely out of the question that Brolin’s Cable is just having an intense moment. That’s perfectly in-character, although not quite to the Full Metal Jacket extremes that Brolin is showcasing here. The thing is, we can’t see Cable looking in a mirror and screaming at himself in anger without thinking of the person that he hates the most: Stryfe, Cable’s evil clone.

Here’s the least convoluted version of their backstory: Cable was sent to the future to be cured of a techno-organic virus, but a clone was made just in case he wouldn’t survive. That clone was then kidnapped and raised by Apocalypse as his heir, which is why Stryfe embraced mutant supremacy and despised humanity.

In the present, Stryfe was introduced as the leader of the Mutant Liberation Front, and Cable’s archenemy. But even Cable was surprised when he saw Stryfe without his mask for the first time. After a particularly lethal battle between them, Cable and Stryfe briefly shared the same body, and Stryfe has continued to be his ultimate nemesis for over two decades.

Considering that Deadpool 2‘s only announced villain is Black Tom Cassidy, it would make sense if Stryfe is being saved as the film’s big bad. Deadpool also has a history with Stryfe from the comics, so he could easily be a worthy enemy on the big screen. But even if Stryfe doesn’t appear in the Deadpool sequel, it seems likely that he’ll show up in the X-Force movie. He’s simply too important to Cable’s past, present, and future to be left out of the story.

The thing that you have to remember about the ’90s is that weird armor with jagged edges was clearly the natural enemy of pouches and ridiculously huge guns. So Stryfe and Cable would have probably hated each other even if they weren’t essentially the same person.
