DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Casts Johnathon Schaech as Jonah Hex

There’s a new legend coming to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and he may be sticking around for a while! The CW has announced that Johnathan Schaech has been cast as the DC western hero, Jonah Hex. And like his comic book counterpart, this version of Jonah Hex may have been a time traveler before he encountered Rip Hunter’s team.

The official description of Jonah Hex from Legends of Tomorrow calls him “a true legend of the Old West, a morally ambiguous gunslinger with a penchant for danger. Surprisingly, he knows a thing or two about time travel and the future, but is at home in the Wild West. He’s been battling outlaws and gangs for a while now, and advises the team to be extra careful when they arrive in the small town of Salvation.”

Hex was created in 1972 by John Albano and Tony DeZuniga who envisioned him as a horrifically scarred bounty hunter with his own code of honor. During the ‘80s, the Hex comic book series sent Jonah Hex into a Mad Max-inspired post-apocalyptic future before later comics returned Hex to his natural western environment. Josh Brolin portrayed Hex in the Jonah Hex live-action movie that inexplicably gave the title character supernatural powers. The version of Hex in Legends of Tomorrow isn’t likely to share those abilities.

Schaech previously starred in History’s Texas Rising miniseries, and he’s also appeared in Quantico, Sleepy Hollow, and Ray Donovan. Schaech will make his first appearance as Jonah Hex in the 11th episode of Legends of Tomorrow, and his deal includes the option to recur on the series. That means that Jonah Hex could potentially show up again later in the season.

Legends of Tomorrow will premiere this Thursday, January 21 on The CW.
