DC Gets its Own Hogwarts with New MYSTIK U Series

DC Comics doesn’t have any shortage of heroes and heroines who use magic and sorcery, but it didn’t really have a place to bring them all together until now. This fall, DC’s newest miniseries, Mystik U, will re-imagine Zatanna, Sebastian Faust, Enchantress, and several other potential heroes as they enroll in “a university for the magically gifted.”

Via Newsarama, writer Alisa Kwitney and artist Mike Norton are the creative team behind Mystik U, which will be released in three bi-monthy issues in the prestige format. Kwitney isn’t shy about bringing up J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series as a source of inspiration for this comic, but added “that other school doesn’t have the House of Mystery or the House of Secrets on its campus! That’s one difference!”

In addition to Zatanna, Faust, and Enchantress, the rest of the cast will include a new character named Pia Morales as well as Sargon the Sorceror. Norton’s character designs for the series have been released, and they all look significantly younger than their counterparts in the DC Rebirth continuity.

Zatanna will apparently be the main character, and Mystik U will actually be a college rather than an academy for children (sounds like they’re going more of a The Magicians route then). Kwitney hinted that there is an someone among the new students who is destined to betray the others and become an unspeakable force for evil.

In addition to the preview page posted above, DC has also released Julian Totino Tedesco’s striking cover for the first issue, as well as the official description for the first issue of the miniseries.

“Leave the world of the mundane behind and step through the magical doors of Mystik U! After a tragic accident, a young Zatanna Zatara, under the guidance of Rose Psychic, enrolls in a mysterious university that teaches its students how to master their unique brands of magic. Will Zatanna fit in with her new classmates (Enchantress, Sargon the Sorcerer, Faust and more!) and unlock her true potential? Find out in this exciting bimonthly miniseries from novelist Alisa Kwitney (DESTINY) and Mike Norton (Revival, Runaways)!”

Mystik U #1 will be released on Wednesday, November 29.
