DC Adds Retro Bombshell Pin-Up Variant Covers In June

DC Comics are following up their recent steampunk Robot Chicken and upcoming Batman ’66 series of variant covers for several of their ongoing titles with something even cooler, and definitely sexier: using their DC Collectibles Bombshells statue line as inspiration (which themselves are inspired by pinups, fashion, advertising and propaganda art from the 1940’s and ’50s) for a series of their own variant covers this upcoming June. Like the statues themselves, they will be designed by artist Ant Lucia. Talking to USA Today, Lucia said “I’m so proud of the work we’ve accomplished on the Bombshell line and very excited to see them become part of the cover series; It has been a privilege to work with the team at DC Collectibles and watch these develop. Having my art on the cover of DC’s comic books has been a dream of mine since I was very young so this is particularly special to me.”

Although many of the covers will be based on existing statues, like Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Stargirl, Supergirl and Poison Ivy, some will be all new and not based on any already existing statues (at least, they aren’t statues yet; that could definitely change if these covers prove popular enough.) One of the all-new covers features Catwoman in a cover very reminiscent of the “saucy” novels that passed for porn back in the forties and fifties:
