Musician David Bowie rarely writes original music for film or television. In fact, itâs been over 20 years since the last time Bowie did that for BBCâs The Buddha of Suburbia. But this fall, that is going to change. Bowie has announced that he has recorded an original song that will serve as the opening theme for The Last Panthers, a six-part crime thriller from the British network Sky and Franceâs CANAL +. The collaboration came from Bowieâs interaction with The Last Panthers director, Johan Renck.
“I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a God,” said Renck in a statement on Bowieâs website. “His first response was precise, engaged and curious. The piece of music he laid before us embodied every aspect of our characters and the series itself – dark, brooding, beautiful and sentimental (in the best possible incarnation of this word). All along, the man inspired and intrigued me and as the process passed, I was overwhelmed with his generosity. I still can’t fathom what actually happened…”
The Last Panthers stars Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim, Goran Bogdan, and screen legend John Hurt. The series reportedly opens with “a daring diamond heist before delving into the dark heart of Europe where a shadowy alliance of gangsters and ‘banksters’ now rule.”
A fall premiere has been scheduled for The Last Panthers in Europe, but the series doesn’t currently have a network in the United States. But it’s pretty likely to make a North American debut in either late 2015 or sometime in 2016.
As for Bowie, heâll also be contributing an original song to The SpongeBob Musical. So fans wonât have to wait another 20 years to hear Bowie create new music for Hollywood.
