David Bowie to Release First in Series of Career-Spanning Box Sets This Fall

It’s probably been years since many of you out there have bought a physical CD, and for some of you younger Millennial types, chances are you’ve never bought one, period. Well, here’s an example of physical media you’ll want to buy and display proudly on your shelf: This fall, rock legend David Bowie will release Five Years 1969-1973, the first in what will be a series of multiple box sets that will chronicle his entire career. Five Years will include six studio albums, two live albums and a compilation titled Re:Call 1. It’s set to hit on September 25 of this year.

The albums included in the first set include Bowie’s his 1967 debut, Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Aladdin Sane and Pin Ups. The live albums are Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture Soundtrack and Live Santa Monica ‘72, which was a former bootleg album that was only released officially seven years ago. Re:Call 1’s two discs will include non-album tracks as well as some unreleased material. The set will also will also include a book with photos, notes on each one of the albums and a foreword by Ray Davies of The Kinks.

No word yet on when the other box sets are due to be released, or just how many there will be, but if each set covers five years or so, it’s quite possible you might end up having a whole shelf devoted to this in your home, considering how prolific David Bowie has been over the last fifty years. But that’s not such a bad thing. I’ll say this though…it’s not really comprehensive unless it includes  ‘Dance, Magic Dance’ from Labyrinth. Don’t forget your Jim Henson years, Mr.Bowie.
