Remember all those Foo Fighters break-up rumors that were circulating a couple weeks ago? And then the hilarious video that debunked the idea that Dave Grohl was going solo? Turns out there may have been at least a smidgen of truth to that.
The Foos went all out to assert that they were sticking together, recording a satirical seven-minute video that they marketed as an official band announcement. For those that haven’t seen it, the clip opens with Grohl talking to Butch Vigâthe Garbage drummer and producer whose fingerprints are on Nirvanaâs Nevermind, some recent Foo material, and a bunch of other stuff. Vig convinces the Foo Fighters frontman to go solo, and what ensues is a collage of hilarity. The band recruits Nick Lachey to audition as a replacement, Grohl faux-records a solo record, and then it ends with explicit confirmation: “For the millionth time, we’re not breaking up. And nobody’s going fucking solo!”
Perhaps no one is “going” solo, but it seems that Grohl is indeed recording some solo tunes. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Vig suggested that Grohl is writing new material without the rest of the band: “I just met with Dave and heâs been writing some songs, but there are no plans for more Foos. I know he talked about another Sonic Highways, but nothingâs come to fruition yet.”
It’s almost certainly some innocuous alone time, though, and Vig also pokes fun at the hiatus video: “Did you see the clip online? You gotta go check it out. Itâs Dave Grohlâs new solo record. He released a little video, and itâs⦠itâs funny. But hopefully Iâll be in the studio again in the fall. If Iâm back in with the Foo Fighters again, that⦠I donât really know.”
So, TLDR: the Foo Fighters are still gonna Foo and we potentially get some new Dave Grohlâthat’s a win-win if I’ve ever heard one. Let us know what you think of the whole ordeal in the comments below.
