Dave Chappelle had his reasons for ducking out of the spotlight for the better part of the last decade, following a successful run on Comedy Central’s Chappelle’s Show that positioned the comedian as one of the most influential figures in his field. Whatever those reasons were, they don’t matter so much anymore, because over the past couple years, he began poking his head back out into the comedy world again, making a full-fledged comeback with his recent Saturday Night Live hosting gig (which gave the show its best ratings in three years).
Now, there’s word that Chappelle is truly, truly back doing what he does best, as it was just revealed that he has a stand-up comedy special heading to Netflix in 2017. Oh, sorry, we mean that he has THREE stand-up comedy specials heading to Netflix in 2017 (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Two of the specials were filmed at Austin City Limits in April 2015 and the Hollywood Palladium in March 2016, while the third has yet to be produced (and they’ll all be directed by Stan Lathan).
âDave Chappelle is a legendary voice in comedy â searing, vital, and now more than ever, essential,â said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix vice president, original documentary and comedy. âDaveâs three new specials promise to be some of the most anticipated events in comedy, and we are honored he will mark his global return on Netflix.â
All we know about the release dates for the three specials is that they’ll come out on the same day in 2017. While waiting for this truly glorious day, revisit a few of our favorite Chappelle sketches and stand-up bits below.
