Dashboard Confessional Just Released a New Song

Welcome back to 2003–we’ve got the first season of the OC, Nokia brick phones, Kazaa, and a new Dashboard Confessional song! Pretty phat, if you ask me! Pretty phat!

The day after we received a new single from Brand New, another beloved emo band has come out of the woodwork with a brand new song, making us pine for the halcyon days of the early aughts, when white teenage suburban angst was at its most profitable and embarrassing. Dashboard Confessional, whom a friend of mine incisively described as the true precursor to Drake, have returned with the song “May,” which is an acoustic love song featuring a keening Chris Carrabba. Though the song is about intimacy and steadfast commitment despite the wisdom of friends, it sounds more like an elegy, something with more emotional baggage than a verse-chorus love song. I guess that is why it’s called emo?

“May” is the first release from Dashboard Confessional since 2009’s “Alter the Ending,” and we have to imagine that this out-of-the-blue release will appear on the Florida-based group’s next album. About the next record, Carrabba told EW, “I don’t have any idea of a release date or a worry about one for that matter. But I’m really excited to be doing it because I don’t think it’s ever felt this much like the beginning again.” A new beginning indeed.

Who do you think will be the next emo band to release a phat surprise single? Let us know in the comments below.

Matt Grosinger is the music editor of Nerdist and thinks that Dashboard Confessional and Brand New should stop beating around the bush to get and just announce an emo revival tour and give our whole office free tickets.
