New DARK SOULS III Gameplay Trailer Showcase Killer Combat at Gamescom

One of the most frustrating and beloved franchises in gaming is becoming a trilogy next year thanks to Dark Souls III. Now, a new trailer coming out of Gamescom has series diehards praising the sun in excitement.

From Software’s latest game boasts an aesthetic and gameplay that seems much more in line with the original Dark Souls than the recent sequel. This could very well be thanks to director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who created the series, was absent for the core game of Dark Souls II, but has now returned for the third game. While Dark Souls II was not the most drastic of departures from the series, the combat, interconnectivity of map areas, character animations and environmental designs were different enough for longtime fans to feel the change.

The video shows off more the new game’s world, the name of which we do not yet know. Much of the design looks like the world of the original game, Lordran, but this has yet to been confirmed. What is most fascinating in the video, though, is the combat and the glimpses of what Miyazaki referred to as “weapon arts” back at E3. Moves such as the quick attack, which sees the hero spin around his opponent and stab them through the back, makes risk/reward gameplay not only more enticing, but more visually rewarding when encounters go the way a player hopes they will. The trailer won’t let us assume that the game is anything different than we have seen in the series before, and offers looks at some of the more harrowing encounters players to which players can look forward. We also get to see the hero dying from the grueling encounters, as we always do in the Souls series.

Get ready to get frustrated all over again when Dark Souls III launches next year. Looking forward to it? Have a Dark Souls story of rage-quitting that you need to share? Let us know in the comments below.
