Holy bullet casings, True Believers! Marvel announced on Tuesday that The Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal would be suiting up as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, for the second season of its Daredevil series on Netflix.
For those of you who may not know, The Punisher is a vigilante who also patrols the streets of New York City — and specifically Hell’s Kitchen — but he takes a far more lethal approach to stopping crime. Given Bernthal’s unhinged portrayal of Shane in The Walking Dead and as a rogue cop with nothing to lose in Mob City, he seems more than up to the task of portraying one of Marvel’s most conflicted and violent characters.
In a press release, Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb said, “Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
This news may not come as a surprise to many who were keeping their ears to the ground as far as Marvel TV rumors were concerned. Recently, many speculated about the appearance of Jason Statham as Bullseye or the possibility of seeing Elektra rear her sai-wielding head for Daredevil‘s second season, but now it seems that Matt Murdock will have a different breed of assassin on his hands. Is there a possibility that we could see The Punisher creep into Captain America: Civil War, which is currently filming in Atlanta? It’s unlikely, but he did have some iconic moments in the original Civil War comic. One thing is for certain: the morgues are going to be working overtime in Hell’s Kitchen come 2016.
What do you think of Jon Bernthal as the Punisher? Who else would you like to see show up in season 2? Let us know in the comments below.
