Do you remember a time without dancing baby Groot? The scene from Guardians of the Galaxy is relatively new, but it became part of the pop culture landscape so quickly that it feels like it’s always been around. The film had many terrific moments, but mini Groot stole the show and our hearts because he’s so frakking cute. Not just cute–the cutest. Fans are still being inspired by the moving and shaking tree, especially now that the screen accurate Groot in a pot is available from Hot Toys.
Stop motion filmmakers Kyle Roberts and Nathan Poppe used the quarter scale figure from Hot Toys as well as a six inch Drax from the Marvel Legends line to make their own tribute to Guardians. They put in several hours to make the minute long video because stop motion requires a level of patience I can’t fathom. Roberts took over 1,000 photos to use with the hand-drawn background by Poppe and carefully edited them together to replicate the charm captured by the film. They even added their own spin to The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” thanks to a cover by Denver Duncan.
Need more stop motion mixed with superheroes? Good because this isn’t Roberts and Poppe’s first rodeo. They also created stop motion versions of the openings for the X-Men cartoon from the ’90s and the 1966 live-action Batman.
Now I feel like I haven’t been using my action figures to their full potential. Maybe I should at least dust them off?
