We just learned a major Star Wars show could be on its way to ABC! Since the 2012 Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, every conceivable platform has seen a Star War: film, comics, games, animated shows, even Hyperspace Mountain at Disney. So it would make sense that ABC—which airs Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, another synergized Disney property—would want to make it their business to get a Star Wars-centric show on their airwaves.

And yesterday at the Television Critics Association‘s summer press tour, our own Joseph McCabe was on the ground and heard from Channing Dungey, ABC’s Entertainment Chief, that it’s certainly a hope and a dream for their network. “I think it will be wonderful to extend that brand into our programming,” she explained to the room of journalists, after confirming that the discussions have taken place with Lucasfilm. So it’s in the works, but what could an ABC Star Wars show look like?

We know it’s possible to make a Star Wars series successful—just look at Star Wars Rebels. And while that is an animated series, the content is what makes it so riveting and could easily translate to something live action. We’re hoping it could mean that the formerly too-expensive Star Wars: Underworld—that live-action series Lucasfilm had Ron Moore of Battlestar Galactica fame working on years ago—could come back! And while there’s no getting around the expense of a Star Wars series (special effects, props, “period” costumes, and sets aren’t cheap), perhaps things like cameos from the franchise’s biggest stars might be enough to keep the ratings high and warrant said costs. But how exactly would we want them to try it?

Welllllll, it’s Nerdist News, so obviously we’ve got some ideas! We’re hoping ABC might try to set the show during an era rich with potential storytelling history—perhaps the time between the original trilogy and the sequels? (Basically, our dream is all the material the Aftermath novels have covered. Or even an Old Republic series! Just… please… stay far, far away from the prequels.)

A show would be a great opportunity, too, to introduce some new characters and/or bring in some de-canonized fan favorites. Not only will it make the show more exciting and unpredictable week to week, but The Force Awakens proved the best parts were the new parts. So, more of that, please!
