One of the several aspects I admire about cosplayers is their ability to make decisions. The number of characters to cosplay is endless. Think about all the books, video games, films, comics, and television series available or even just the ones you know. There are hundreds of thousands. Now, consider all the characters contained in that media. The number of choices is probably in the millions. Even if I narrowed the field down to my favorites, there are still more than a few characters to choose from.

I guess you can use factors like difficulty, cost, etc. when making the final decision, and I see some cosplayers limit their work based on the materials used. For example, some really like to make armor and specialize in crafting it with foam or Worbla. Imgur user Glamazonian Rage did an excellent job with the armor for her Johanna cosplay:
