Comics Relief: Will Marvel’s CIVIL WAR II See the Return of Phoenix?

Welcome to your weekend edition of Comics Relief, where today we’ve got plenty of news from all corners of the comics world. To kick things off this weekend we’ve got some more teasers from Marvel’s upcoming Civil War II, one of which might have big implications for X-Men fans. Read on for more info…

Marvel releases two more Civil War II teaser images, featuring Black Panther and Jean Grey

Earlier this week, we got one of our first teaser images from Marvel for their upcoming sequel to Civil War, which is set to hit this spring from writer Brian Michael Bendis. The first teaser featured Thor, and now these two latest ones feature the Black Panther and Jean Grey.

What’s most interesting about the Jean Grey image is that we can see what appears to be the Phoenix flames surrounding her. Could that just be artistic license, or are we getting the younger Jean going through her own Dark Phoenix saga by way of Civil War II? And if it is the Phoenix…how many times can Marvel milk that particular cow?? Time will tell if the Phoenix is really coming back, but in the meantime you can check out both teaser images below: [Comic Book, CBR]

Joss Whedon returns to Marvel for Captain America anniversary story

Although writer/director Joss Whedon hasn’t written a comic for Marvel since his run on Astonishing X-Men with artist John Cassaday, the writer/director responsible for giving us the big screen Avengers is returning to the publisher to write a one-off short story celebrating the 75th anniversary of Captain America. The story is set to run in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7, which is due to hit stores at the end of March. For more on the subject, be sure to read our fill story right here: [Nerdist]

Dynamite Entertainment brings Pathfinder to Humble Bundle

Dynamite Entertainment has partnered up with Humble Bundle several times in the recent past, and this time their latest Bundle is all about Pathfinder, the comics spin-off of the popular tabletop game. There will be over 100 pages of comics and 30 maps available via the Humble Bundle’s usual “pay what you want” model. A portion of the proceeds also goes to various charities, including Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Doctors Without Borders, Camden’s Concert, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation) via the PayPal Giving Fund.

Each issue also includes a bonus Pathfinder RPG gaming appendix with game statistics, encounters, and miniatures-scale tactical battle maps perfect for use with the tabletopPathfinder RPG. This bundle contains over 30 comics and more than 20 battle maps, 2 Exclusive Maps, miniatures, and would cost over $100 to purchase individually—and of course—the exclusive maps not available outside of this promotion! DC releases first music EP from superhero turned rocker Black Canary

Last year’s reinvention of Black Canary had the famous Justice Leaguer and bad ass crimefighter start a whole new career as a singer in a rock band in an new ongoing series, which she then names after herself (how very Dazzler of you Dinah). Now DC Comics has actually released an EP of Black Canary’s band, so we can all hear just how amazing a performer she is.

Black Canary series co-writer Brenden Fletcher teamed up with producer Joseph Donovan and Caveboy singer Michelle Bensimon for the new three-song EP, and you can listen to the EP here, and also buy it on bandcamp. Han Solo finally gets his own solo series

Ever since Marvel regained the rights to produce Star Wars comics last year, their new books have been setting the comics world on fire. Aside from the core Star Wars title, there have been solo series for many of the major characters, like Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and more. But there’s been one big missing solo series, and that’s the one with “solo” in the title: Han Solo.

That’s about to change though, as Marvel has announced a Han Solo mini-series set for June, coming from writer Marjorie Liu. Speaking to EW, Liu said of Han in this new series — which is set between A New Hope and Empire — “This is a Han Solo who doesn’t quite know who he is anymore. He doesn’t think about politics, and suddenly he’s thrust into this life-or-death struggle for beliefs he didn’t even know he cared about — and it has changed him.” The art on this one is coming from Mark Brooks, with covers by Lee Bermejo. Marvel wants you to “Vote for Loki” in 2016. Where do we sign up?

We try to steer away from political discourse here on Comics Relief, but without getting into it too much, I think we can all agree that this election season is straight out of an episode of The Jerry Springer Show from 1998. Which is maybe why Marvel is pushing “Vote for Loki” as a new series coming this June.

I mean, right about now, the God of Mischief seems like a welcome change from what we’ve got going on right now. I’m just sayin’. Whether or not this leads to an actual story, I don’t know, but in the meantime, you can see Marvel’s “Vote for Loki” covers in our gallery below. [Nerdist]
