Comics Relief: DC Releases Details On WONDER WOMAN: THE VERY SELFISH PRINCESS

Happy WonderCon weekend, fangirls and fanboys! Before all the big news drops from the big convention in L.A., we here at Comics Relief are going to catch you up on the rest of the comics news you might have missed this week, including the latest on a new graphic novel starring newly minted movie star, Wonder Woman. Read on for all the details…

DC Releases Details, Early Cover Art For Wonder Woman: The Very Selfish Princess

Although the big Wonder Woman original graphic novel this year that has everyone talking is Grant Morrison’s upcoming Wonder Woman: Earth One, there’s another take on the Amazing Amazon coming out in 2016 that’s been going a little bit under the radar. Also coming out this year is Wonder Woman: The Very Selfish Princess, by Scary Godmother creator Jill Thompson. DC has released an early version of the cover for the OGN, along with a new synopsis:

Wonder Woman: The Very Selfish Princess is Jill Thompson’s storybook-style reimagining of the early years of the Amazon Princess Diana, who would grow up to become Wonder Woman. This fully painted graphic novel is unlike any Wonder Woman tale you have ever read, told as only Eisner Award-winning writer/artist Thompson could. When young Diana has the fawning attention of a nation, she soon grows spoiled. But a series of tragic events take their toll, and Diana must learn to grow up, take responsibility, and seize her destiny.

Steeped in the mythology of this iconic character’s original conception, Wonder Woman: The Very Selfish Princess is designed to appeal to a wide range of readers. It’s a fresh, standalone interpretation of the most famous and iconic female superhero of all time and the fulfillment of a dream project by one of contemporary comics’ most acclaimed creators.

The series will be published digitally first, via ComiXology, before being collected in graphic novel form. [Bleeding Cool]

What Are Wonder Woman’s All-Time Greatest Stories, Anyway?

Speaking of Wonder Woman, who makes her big screen debut finally in Batman v Superman this week after a very, very long wait to see her come to life again in live-action, the folks at Comics Alliance have put together a video detailing what they believe Wonder Woman’s top five stories are.

While I have some issue with what came in at #2 on the list — not this Wonder Woman fan’s choice — the rest of their selections are pretty darn spot-on. Whoever said Wonder Woman doesn’t have any definitive stories has clearly never bothered to really look. Check out the whole video of Wonder Woman’s Top Five below: [Comics Alliance]

Legendary Comics Shares Story Details, Art for New Superhero Book Axiom

Legendary has been making a name for itself in the comics world recently, with books like Annihilator and Harvester. Now they are officially adding in their first honest to goodness superhero comic, with veteran comic creators Mark Waid as writer and Ed Benes on art.

Called Axiom, the original graphic novel tells the story of Axiom and Thena, aliens who come to earth and exhibit extraordinary powers. “Benevolent and godlike, they cure humanity’s ills and usher in an era of peace, prosperity and complacency.” But soon, the other side of these godlike beings is exposed, and mankind’s new saviors turn into mankind’s nightmare. The comic will be a 130 page softcover graphic novel, and hit comic shops in April. [Bleeding Cool]

Greatest Vintage Collection of DC Comics Goes On Display In London

One of the most prized and expensive collections in comics is about to go on tour and be open to the public. This past week in London, lucky fans got to see what’s being called “the Impossible Collection” (DC Chapter), which features more than 1,000 DC comics vintage classics, including the first appearances of Superman in Action Comics #1 (with one of the highest graded copies in the world to boot) and Batman in Detective Comics #27. This collection will go on a worldwide tour at some point, although the details of that are still being worked out. A Marvel version of the tour is also in the planning stages.

The collection is the property of Ayman Hariri, the son of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri, and the entire collection is a relatively recent acquisition. He stared collecting after his father was assassinated in 2005, inspired by a drawing his father had done of Superman. “What sets the Impossible Collection apart – beyond the improbability of seeing over 1,000 original comic books in such incredible condition – is its breadth and depth which are unprecedented,” said Vincent Zurzolo, a spokesman for the Impossible Collection. You can see examples of some of the comic on display by clicking here.  [CBR and Bleeding Cool]
