It’s time for you mid-week edition of Comics Relief fangirls and fanboys, and in today’s installment, we’ve got news on a new original graphic novel by Harley Quinn co-creator Paul Dini, and the latest on just what happened to Cyclops in the new Marvel Universe. Brian K. Vaughan Announces New Series Barrier for Panel Syndicate
Critically acclaimed author of Saga and Y: The Last Man Brian K. Vaughan, has announced another new series for 2016 called Barrier. The 53-page story is available on Panel Syndicate, written by Vaughan, with art by Marcos Martin and colors by Munsta Vicente. As is the case with all comics on this service, the series is creator-owned, DRM-free, and available on a pay-what-you-want model. So far, all we know comes from a teaser image tweeted with the announcement of the comic by Vaughan, which you can see below. And we all know is it’s going to be… quite purple. [IGN]
Titan Comics to “Blow Up” Your Local Comic Shop for Independence Day Comic
Coming in March 2016, UK publisher Titan Comics will be publishing a new Independence Day comic book by Victor Gischler and Steve Scott, set to accompany the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster movie. In a cool little promotion, retailers will be able to commission special versions of the cover which will show their comic shops blown up just like the White House in the original movie. Adam Hughes Gives the DC Heroines an Art Nouveau Makeover
Veteran comic book artist Adam Hughes is known chiefly for his illustrations of beautiful women, but one of his most stunning pieces has remained unseen until now. Now Hughes’ wife, Allison Sohn, has posted a set of four pieces that were done by Hughes on commision on her Facebook page, all featuring DC heroines.
The piece features Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl and Zatanna, requested to look like Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha’s painting “The Four Seasons”. Since these were done as commissions, they won’t be released commercially, but you can check out images of the piece below: [Bleeding Cool]
Paul Dini Tells Autobiographical Story in new Batman OGN Dark Night
Writer Paul Dini, co-creator of Harley Quinn and producer on the now-classic Batman: The Animated Series, has announced a different kind of comic featuring the Caped Crusader. This new OGN, entitled Dark Night: A True Batman Story, is being published by DC Comics and Vertigo, and is an autobiographical tale about Dini’s recovery from a brutal mugging back in the early ’90s. Dini was able to do this with the help of the imaginary heroes and villains of Gotham City he helped to write. 100 Bullets artist Eduardo Risso is illustrating the graphic novel, which hits comic shops in June of 2016. So, Just What Happened to Cyclops in The New Marvel Universe?
So fans who are picking up the “All-New All Different” Marvel titles which started coming out last month are wondering what happened in the eight month gap between the end of Secret Wars (which still hasn’t come out yet; see the following item) and the new status quo of the Marvel Universe.
The biggest mystery is the X-Men’s Cyclops, who apparently went from being the man who united all of mutantdom in harmony at the end of Uncanny X-Men #600, to the most hated man on Earth. So just what happened?

It appears that Cyclops is dead. Or as dead as anyone is in comics.
So how did Scott Summers die? It seems it happened in an attack on the Inhumans. The Inhuman Terrigen mists, which give them their powers, have proved lethal to mutants, and probably caused Cyke to go crazy (again). I’m sure more details are forthcoming as the months roll on. In the meantime, young time-travelling Cyclops continues to appear in the page of All-New X-Men. [Comic Book Resources]
Final Issue of Secret Wars Delayed Again
The post-Secret Wars Marvel Universe is already in full swing, and the actual Secret Wars mini-series is delayed yet again, with the final issue now coming out in January 2016. During the summer, Marvel Comics announced that its Secret Wars crossover event would get an extra issue to finish up its storyline. Secret Wars #9 was originally slated to be out next month, but fans are just going to have to wait if they want to read the final issue.
Now the publisher has revealed that Secret Wars #9 has been pushed back a few weeks, and will now arrive in comic book stores on January 6, 2016. The Secret Wars miniseries began last May, and was the culmination of writer Jonathan Hickman’s long-running storyline that led into the current All-New, All-Different Marvel relaunch.
Artist Esad Ribic has illustrated every issue of the primary Secret Wars miniseries. Due to the delay, all the current Marvel relaunches are explicity avoiding giving away the ending of Secret Wars, and how it affects the overall Marvel Universe. March: Book One Gets New Oversized Edition from Top Shelf
The award-winning graphic novel March: Book One will return to comic book stores next year in an all new format. Announced by Top Shelf Productions, the acclaimed graphic novel, which is Congressman John Lewis’ memoir, is getting the oversized treatment, measuring 8″ x 11.7″. This is the first in a planned trilogy of memoirs, which tell the story of U.S. Congressman John Lewis’ early involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. The novel was co-written by Lewis and Andrew Aydin, and features illustrations by Nate Powell. The oversized hardcover edition of March: Book One is now available for pre-order and ships in February of 2016.
