New York Comic Con is in full effect this week as scores of your favorite creators, artists and on-screen versions of your favorite characters make the trek to New York City. For those of us stuck on the West Coast, though, or anywhere outside New York, for that matter, there are still plenty of reasons to celebrate that you made it all the way to Wednesday. From The Walking Dead #115 kicking off “All Out War” and the title’s tenth anniversary to the premiere of Afterlife with Archie to the chilling X-Men-meets-the-AIDS-Crisis tale of Death Sentence, this week’s pull list is fit to burst with all manner of awesome titles. Afterlife with Archie #1 | Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla

Since it was first announced back in March, we have been waiting for Afterlife with Archie with bated breath and an unearthly hunger for human brains. Coming from Glee and Carrie remake writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and the phenomenal Black Beetle artist Francesco Francavilla, Afterlife with Archie offers up all your favorite Riverdale residents with an undead twist: zombies are running rampant in Riverdale. Can you guess who’s responsible? If you said, “Jughead,” give yourself a pat on the back. After his beloved pet pooch Hotdog gets run over by Reggie’s car, Jughead convinces everyone’s favorite sassy Wiccan, Sabrina, to make an unholy covenant and bring him back from beyond the puppy pale. Not all dogs go to heaven, unfortunately, and this one comes back as a zombie that bites Jughead and unleashes an undead horde upon the unsuspecting citizenry. “Escape From Riverdale” is a delightfully twisted take on the classic Archie universe, and Francavilla’s artwork really elevates the material from phantasmic to fantastic. Aguirre-Sacasa and Francavilla are like peanut butter and chocolate together – a terrific combination that we should be kicking ourselves for not discovering sooner. Shamble, don’t walk, down to your local comic book store and snag a copy post-haste.

The Walking Dead #115 | Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard

Ten years long and still going strong, The Walking Dead’s long-brewing conflict between Negan’s Saviors, the Kingdom, the Hilltop, and Rick’s group at Alexandria comes to a head this week, as the long-awaited, twelve-part “All Out War” arc begins its death march. Despite the months and months of intrigue, brinksmanship, and table-setting, not an awful lot happens in this issue. It’s more about battening down the hatches and wind up the proverbial hand for an open palm slap aimed at Negan’s face. Still, the tension is palpable and Kirkman and Adlard really give us a sense of scale when talking about the two armies. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen just how deep Negan rolls. Now, we get a sense of how many survivors there are out there who will band together to stand up to his bat-loving, corporal-punishing brand of tyranny. Remarkably, for an issue all about the long road to a violent conflict, this is a surprisingly peaceful issue. The calm before the storm, if you will. Except there are some seriously mean lookin’ clouds on the horizon, and knowing Kirkman, when it rains, it pours.

Death Sentence #1 |Montynero and Mike Dowling

Relatively new to the comics publishing field, Titan Comics is making some major headway, and if they keep turning out titles as instantly readable and inspired as Death Sentence, then they are going to be a real force to be reckoned with. From writer Montynero and artist Mike Dowling, Death Sentence is equal parts X-Men and AIDS crisis, revolving around a group of people afflicted by the G-Plus virus, which gives the infected approximately six months to live, but also gives them extranormal abilities (read: superpowers). Striking that delicate balance of feeling familiar and brand new at the same time, Death Sentence #1 is a gripping, electrifying story that draws you in deeper and deeper before flipping the plot on its head and ending on a high note. Creators, take note: this is exactly how a first issue should be done. Slick writing, eye-catching artwork and a solid premise make for a seriously enjoyable read and a seriously impatient reader, as we have to wait a full month to read issue #2.
