Man, alive, Image Comics has really found its sweet spot in mixing hardboiled crime drama with elements of horror and the supernatural. With successes like Fatale and Ten Grand already under its belt, Steve Niles’s Chin Music #1 is worthwhile addition to its growing collection and is the start of an exciting new series. Illustrated by Tony Harris, Chin Music follows the mysterious Shaw, a man on the run and lost in time, who finds himself in Prohibition-era Chicago, where he must battle gangsters, demons and, of course, his past. Get in on the ground floor, folks, because this book looks like it’s going places.

Star Wars #5 | Brian Wood and Carlos D’Anda

Did you celebrate May the 4th, a.k.a. Star Wars Day, this weekend? We certainly did, but what better way to keep the celebration going than with Brian Wood and Carlos D’Anda’s consistently terrific ongoing Star Wars series from Dark Horse. With Leia caught in between two squadrons of TIE Fighters, it’s up to Luke to use his wits and wiles to rescue the Princess before the Empire tightens their increasingly vice-like grip. From D’Anda’s lush visuals to Wood’s driving narrative, this series manages to capture some of the giddiness you felt when your first saw the films, and is a great way to get your Force fix until Episode VII finally drops.

Marvel delivers a comic book fan’s dream come true in the form of Iron Man #258.2, which brings back the legendary David Micheline and Bob Layton to reprise their seminal “Armor Wars” storyline. Whether or not you were onboard with Iron Man 3‘s big twist, we can all agree that this is a worthwhile follow-up to one of Iron Man’s defining storylines, and the fact that Marvel wrangled its original author and artist makes it an ironclad addition to anyone’s pull list.
