Chances are that you’re probably still reeling from the news that Jeremy Irons will be playing Alfred and Jesse Eisenberg will be playing Lex Luthor in 2016’s Batman vs. Superman vs. Kramer vs. Kramer vs. Predator, but why bother yourself with something that’s two years away when you can revel in the bountiful treasures of Comic Book Day? This week’s pull list is great for you as a reader, bad for you as someone who can make sound financial decisions, and just okay if you’re neither of the above.

Ms. Marvel #1 | Marvel Comics | G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona

The all-new Ms. Marvel has had a lot of pre-publicity, not only because it’s a new ongoing series featuring a female lead, still sadly a rarity for mainstream superhero comics, but also an ongoing series featuring a young Muslim character, which may very well be a first for a major publisher. While the first issue of Ms. Marvel doesn’t break any new storytelling ground in terms of how superhero stories are told, it is nevertheless a total delight to read. Writer G. Willow Wilson, author of the Vertigo graphic novel Cairo, is both a woman and Muslim, so she’s the perfect person to bring this character to life with an authentic voice.

Just on a pure storytelling level, Ms. Marvel #1 channels old school sixties Marvel in the best possible way. The first six pages introduce not only [our heroine] Kamala [Khan], but her friend Nakia, her older brother, her parents, and the annoying popular kids at school, Zoe and Josh, all quickly and efficiently. You immediately know just about everything you need to know about all these characters with just a few choice words and phrases. This comic offers pretty much everything you could want from a modern superhero book. It’s fun without being dumb, has a light breezy air to the writing, and more than anything, the storytelling is efficient. In this era of long, drawn out stories, here we are presented with an origin story that takes place all in one brief issue. This is why the book harkens back to classic Stan Lee for me, but with a modern touch; much like Amazing Fantasy #15 back in 1962 told Spider-Man’s origins in a brief 15-page story, this does the same in only a slightly longer length of time. Oh, we still don’t know how Kamala got her powers exactly, but regardless of what the answer is, we got all the basics we need to know in this first issue.

People say they want diversity in comics; Well, time to put your money where your mouth is and support this book. Not only is Ms. Marvel a book with good intentions, it’s also well done enough that it stands on its own regardless. It’s just a well done superhero comic, period, and my hope is that fans will rally behind this one.

The Fox #4 | Red Circle Comics | Dean Haspiel and Mark Waid

In case the dynamic duo of Haspiel and Waid wasn’t enough to get you onboard with Red Circle’s recently revived The Fox, then perhaps this will: Do it already. Seriously, just do it. Whether you realized it or not, The Fox has quietly become one of the most consistently entertaining superhero books on the market, expertly balancing its humorous, laugh-a-minute tone with creative characters, frenetic action sequences, and a sense of high adventure that simply cannot be phoned in. When The Fox is at its best, it plays out like a spiritual successor to books like The Tick, managing to simultaneously skewer and celebrate the things we love about the superhero genre. Issue #4 finds us in the middle of a melee maelstrom in Diamond World, where the Fox and his crime fighting cohorts must battle against a mind-controlled, axe-wielding king and a meddlesome Druid, and find a way home from this multifaceted, laser-cut realm. It’s a rollicking, immensely enjoyable issue with delightfully over-the-top artwork and quippy dialogue galore that manages to entertain without wearing out its welcome. Throw in a The Shield back-up story as well, and The Fox #4 is just gravy.

Red Light Properties | IDW Publishing | Dan Goldman

The supernatural spectres and occult occurrences in Dan Goldman’s Red Light Properties aren’t the darkest thing contained in the trade paperback’s pages. Rather, it’s the personal demons and relationships that plague Jude Tobin and his family that forces us as readers to look into the mirror and see a bit of Jude in ourselves. Goldman’s long-running webcomic has been re-edited, re-colored, re-lettered, and re-scripted thanks to the fine folks at IDW Publishing, who have collected it in physical form for the first time ever in a trade paperback that boasts 20 never-before-seen pages. Red Light Properties is a whip smart, pitch black comedy that pulls few punches and offers up a slew of supremely memorable, highly dysfunctional, yet surprisingly realistic characters. If you can look past the fact that they spend a good deal of their time dealing with the supernatural, the Tobins feel like people you know, which is a testament to Goldman’s ability as a storyteller. From his eye-catching artwork to his innovative panel design and his unique character designs, Goldman’s book is a visual feast that spirits the reader away to the darker side of Miami, one which you’ll be reluctant to leave. Life, death, and real estate — is there anything else you need? Yes, and the answer to that is a shiny new copy of IDW’s Red Light Properties.
