Kickstarter for Denver, Valiant unveiled their epic Valiant First initiative, and Gotham found a whole slew of new cast members including Alfred and the Penguin! But now, it’s Comic Book Day and there’s a slew of brand new titles for your reading pleasure. From the relaunch of She-Hulk to a superpowered WWII-era Downton Abbey-esque mini-series to more Walking Dead goodness, this week’s pull list is guaranteed to put a smile on your face (and a hole in your wallet).

America, meet your new favorite book. If there was any doubt in your mind whether Charles Soule was one of the best writers working right now, then look no further than She-Hulk #1. a slick, self-assured, and surprisingly funny new book that gives us a taste of both sides of Jennifer Walters — the Avenger and the attorney. We meet Jessica during a transitional employment as she takes on a case for Holly Harrow, widow of the late Jonas Harrow, that takes her through the wringer in the courtroom and in Stark Tower as she goes head to head with Tony Stark’s formidable legal team. Melding the courtroom drama of Daredevil and the the day-to-day minutiae of Hawkeye, She-Hulk #1 strikes a sweet a narrative sweet spot, nicely setting the table for adventures to come and making one hell of a first impression. This is also thanks in large part to Javier Pulido’s expressive pencils and Muntsa Vicente’s vibrant color palette, which gives the book a throwback aesthetic that’s absolutely bursting with life and charisma. This is a case study in how to deliver a compelling first issue and something you definitely don’t want to leave off your pull list.

The Royals: Masters of War #1 | Vertigo | Rob Williams, Simon Coleby, JD Mettler, and Wes Abbott

The press release for The Royals: Masters of War compares it to “Downton Abbey crossed with the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan,” and I’ve got to say, for once, it wasn’t hyperbole. This book was dynamite from start to finish, from its explosive opening sequence to its clever, nuanced Upstairs/Downstairs drama. Immediately, you’ll find yourself pulled into this elaborate, imaginative vision of World War II-era Europe thanks to some jaw-dropping artwork from artist Simon Coleby. Seriously, just crack open the book and flip to page two — you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. But The Royals: Masters of War isn’t just eye candy; this is a mini-series with legs, one that posits, “What if those people of royal descent had superpowers?” It’s a clever conceit and one that plays out beautifully as we get a look at the politics of the era and how over time, the Royal Family of England ceased using its powers to lead their nation into glorious battles in favor of sitting on their royal rumps and gadding about with high society. There’s plenty to like here for fans of soapy, class-based drama and fans of far out alt-history war stories, so do yourself a favor and pull this from a store shelf like Arthur pulled the sword from the stone.

The Walking Dead #121 | Image Comics | Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Stefano Gaudiano, Rus Wooton, and Cliff Rathburn

The return of The Walking Dead to television airways didn’t ease the dull, aching hunger for Robert Kirkman’s wonderful slice of apocalyptica. Rather, it made me crave it even more, especially since “All Out War” has been one massive cliffhanger after another. It’s been a fantastic, exhausting, and bloody journey for Rick and the survivors as we’ve seen Negan go from Glenn-killing Governor clone to Andrew Dice Clay-meets-Henry Rollins with a murderous streak. Things are not looking good for our heroes after the volley of grenades Negan’s men rained upon them last week, and this week finds them licking their wounds. Yet, as is the case with so many The Walking Dead issues, just when you think it’s going to be nothing but table-setting, the other shoe drops and shit hits all types of fans. So, go ahead and thank your lucky stars for the book’s bimonthly schedule, then sink your teeth into another heaping helping of undead goodness. You’ve earned it.
