It was a simpler time back in 1938 – Adolf Hitler was TIME‘s “Person of the Year,” Action Comics #1 was published, and Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs hit US theaters – but where was the team of masked vigilantes policing our streets? Well, on November 28th, Chris Roberson and Alex Ross will shed some light on the cadre of costumed crimefighters who kept the streets of New York free from fascist rule in Masks, an eight issue mini-series from Dynamite Entertainment. We thought Dynamite had peaked with Prophecy’s Red Sonja/Dracula/Vampirella superteam, but with fully painted interiors by Alex Ross and an ensemble featuring the Shadow, Green Hornet, Kato, Zorro, the Spider, and more, Masks looks like the right balance of pulp and gorgeous artwork we’ve been waiting for.
Set among the backdrop of a world on the brink of war, the masked men of Dynamite’s superhero stable are faced with a exorcising the devil within – the rise of the American fascist movement. While it was quashed in real life, this version of New York isn’t nearly as fortunate when the Justice Party takes office in New York state, using powerful criminals to bend the law to their iron will. Not content to lie about and let injustice prevail, the domino masked marauders will have to join forces to take down the powers that be.
No stranger to alternate histories with an ensemble crew, Roberson seems like a natural choice to pen a pulpy period piece with larger-than-life characters. His work on Cinderella: From Fabletown with Love, his pulp anthology Adventure, and Celestial Empire alt-history novels give him a seriously impressive utility belt for balancing big Dynamite’s big personalities and giving everyone ample screen time. Even more exciting though is the prospect of a fully painted mini-series from Alex Ross; honestly, I haven’t been this mesmerized by backgrounds since Kingdom Come.
Still not convinced? Well, feast your eyes on a selection of pages, issue #1 variant covers, and an exclusive hand-painted cover from Alex Ross. Holding out for more? No doubt, this is awesome. It’s not every day you come across a blog that’s this good on web 2.
0 site, and you’ve got it down completely. Not too many individuals these days take the time to actually put some thought into this issue. It’s cool that I was able to find this while searching
for related topics.
I visited various blogs however the audio quality for audio songs present at this
web site is truly excellent.
Damn! No one can beat Alex Ross. He just nails it in this almost transcendental way. Too bad he’s not a film director.
Wow, this looks to be great! 😀
