Comic Book Day: Archiepocalypse Now, or “Afterlife with Archie”

What’s a man to do after he’s saved Spider-Man from messing up his step-ball-changes? Write a zombie-filled Archie comic, of course!

Glee writer (and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark‘s scribe-cum-savior) Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is taking a trip to Riverdale, but with a twist: it’s been overrun by flesh-eating monsters. If you thought Archie, Betty and Veronica’s love triangle was complicated now, just wait until there’s only two bullets left between the three of them! Too dark? Too bad – it’s the zombie apocalypse, after all, and this time Jughead isn’t hungry for hamburgers. He wants a literal Manwich.

How does the shit hit Riverdale’s proverbial fans? Well, if you guessed “it’s Jughead’s fault,” you wouldn’t be wrong. After Reggie runs over his beloved pet pup Hotdog, Jughead convinces local teenage witch Sabrina to cast a spell to bring him back from beyond the grave. As we all know, all dogs don’t go to heaven, and when Hotdog bites Jughead, he passes on an otherworldly hunger for human flesh. Classic Jughead, right, guys?

How did all of this come about? According to Deadline, Aguirre-Sacasa said it “combines two of my great passions, Archie comics and horror comics. This series came out of conversations with Jon Goldwater, asking questions like, “What if the Archie characters found themselves in a Stephen King novel like The Stand or a Sam Raimi movie like The Evil Dead? Could we pull that off, tonally? We’re really going for it. The first arc is called ‘Escape from Riverdale.’  The second arc is called, brace yourself, ‘Betty RIP.'” Considering this is the guy who penned the upcoming Chloë Grace Moretz-starring Carrie remake, we think he knows a thing or two about horror.

And without further ado, here’s the first promo image:

Are you excited to see how our beloved boy ginger copes with the horrors of the undead? Quemment below and let us know!

I say that Kevin needs to be turned into a zombie and the appropriate action needs to be taken for dealing with the walking dead. This is how the Archie comics need to end! Archie, you sold out and you were never interesting. Please move on and call your company something else now, okay? Thank you.
