After months of speculation, a false casting rumor, and then finally last week’s unofficial announcement by way of one of the stars, True Detective season 2 has found two of its three leads: Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. Soak it in, America: your mysterious, existential good/bad/grey-area guys are here and ready for their HBO-based close up and/or prestige.
The It’s-Not-TV network announced the news on Tuesday afternoon with a press release detailing not only the characters names and general outline, but also a log line for the 8-episode long season itself: “Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.”
So far we know the names of one of those three police officers â played by Farrell â and that career criminal â played by Vaughn. The release also confirmed that director Justin Lin is on board for at least the first two episodes, unlike last season which only had one director (Cary Fukunaga).
Colin Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, “a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.” Vince Vaughn will play Frank Semyon â one can assume the aforementioned mobster that owns Velcoro, but who knows â “a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.”
My, how far we’ve come. Remember all the talk when this first began? How there was talk of Rachel McAdams, Elizabeth Moss, and maybe/possibly even Michelle Forbes? And who could, of course, forget that Jessica Chastain rumor, right? Well there’s still hope that some â maybe even all? â of those ladies could still be involved, minus Chastain, as there are several roles yet to be cast. Fingers crossed for a bit more diversity â both racially and gender-ly â with the rest of the crew?
What do you think of the Farrell/Vaughn team-up? Let us hear your thoughts â and see your fan art! â in the comments.

Fuck Vince Vaughn!!! He is way over his 15 minutes of fame. There are so many better choices than him… I already can see the drop of quality
