CLOAK AND DAGGER Trailer Shows Us a New Origin Story for the Marvel Duo

We don’t think we’re jumping the gun when we say that Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger series could be a complete reinvention of everything we knew about Marvel’s heroic duo. The new trailer has arrived, and it shifts the action away from their traditional New York setting to New Orleans, unraveling a new origin story for Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt). The video hints that Tyrone and Tandy encountered each other while they were children before reuniting as teens. It also ominously predicts death in the future for at least one of the titular heroes.

The trailer lets us see Tyrone/Cloak use his powers of darkness to teleport, while Tandy/Dagger unleashes her signature light daggers. In a departure from the source material, Cloak and Dagger’s abilities actually keep them from touching each other by violently thrusting them apart.

The story has also reworked their respective backgrounds. Instead of being out on the streets, Tyrone has a home and loving parents, as well as a promising stint on the high school basketball team. All things considered, he’s doing pretty well in these clips. Tandy is still a runaway, but it’s unclear if she still had a life of privilege before leaving home.

Beyond the titular duo, the trailer doesn’t reveal whom Cloak and Dagger will be going up against. But perhaps its not a coincidence the Roxxon logo keeps popping up in the key art for the series. Within the Marvel Universe, Roxxon is a corrupt oil and energy company that often has connections to supervillains and criminal activity. We don’t expect it to change in this incarnation!

Cloak & Dagger will premiere on Thursday, June 7, on Freeform.
