CHVRCHES Show Love for Justin Bieber and Cover ‘What Do You Mean?’

Justin Bieber is shaking the moral fabric of America… nay, the world. By that, we mean that people are questioning everything they have ever believed in because his more recent musical output is making fans out of pretty much everybody with a mind open enough to see past their reflexive Bieber hate. Such is true for CHVRCHES’ Martin Doherty, who is impressed by “What Do You Mean?” and Jack Ãœ’s “Where Are Ãœ Now”, which features Bieber.

On a recent episode of the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, Doherty said, “After those two tunes, I had a sit-down with myself and thought, ‘Oh my god, I’m actually a Justin Bieber fan. How did this happen?’ But fair play to him, you know?” We know, and we see you and the rest of CHVRCHES slaying a cover of “What Do You Mean?” on the program. Give it a watch above–the performance starts at 2:06 into the video.

CHVRCHES put their own spin on the tune but ultimately don’t change it all that much, making it more dance-ready and adding their idiosyncratic, techno-inspired synth sounds. And Lauren Mayberry’s vocals could improve just about any song. As one of the fan comments from after the performance pointed out, hearing a good cover of a previously dismissed song can change your opinion about the original, so maybe CHVRCHES can serve as the bridge to Bieber for indie kids who are just too darn cool to like the kid who made “Baby”.
