Itâs long been assumed that Chris Evans wasnât going to be staying in the Marvel Cinematic Universe past his initial contract with Marvel Studios. Before signing on to star in Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans even got Marvel to reduce the initial nine-picture deal to a six-picture deal that would have culminated with the third Avengers movie. Those plans were slightly changed when Avengers: Infinity War became two movies instead of one.
However, Evans recently made it clear that he has no intention of laying down his shield anytime soon. In an interview with Collider, Evans put the ball back into Marvelâs court regarding his appearances in Phase 4 of the MCU.
âListen, if Marvel wants me, they got me,â said Evans. âIâve never had such a relationship where you have such â I mean look at my resume, Iâm used to being on set being like, âAh is this movie gonna be terrible?â Marvel just canât stop making great movies, they do it in their sleep. Itâs wonderful directors and producers and actors and scripts, and itâs like a playground as an actor.â
âItâs so mind-boggling that I was so tentative in the beginning to jump onboard,â continued Evans. âWhat an aâhole I would be if I hadnât done this. I mean can you imagine? Kicking myself â Iâd never forgive myself!â
Even if Evans does decide to move on from Captain America in the future, thereâs a long history of other characters taking over the mantle in the comic books…before Steve Rogers inevitably takes back the role. At some point in the future, Marvel Studios will probably consider recasting the core Avengers characters (including Captain America), but there’s no reason to rush the current cast out the door.
Evans has previously mentioned that he wants to do more behind-the-camera work, and his directorial debut, Before We Go, was released in theaters and VOD this week. His next MCU appearance, Captain America: Civil War will be released on May 6, 2017.
