Charles Soule Gives Daredevil and The Punisher a Rematch

In the Marvel Universe, Daredevil and the Punisher are far from strangers, but they are definitely not friends. Sure, they’ve teamed up a few times, but the costumed alter egos of Matt Murdock and Frank Castle are better known for butting heads than joining forces. It’s been awhile since the Punisher and Daredevil last squared off, but that’s going to change next month!

Current Daredevil writer Charles Soule is scripting a new digital first Daredevil/Punisher miniseries with art by Szymon Kudranski. Additionally, artist Reilly Brown is also onboard the miniseries to provide storyboards and page breakdowns.

While speaking to Comic Book Resources, Soule revealed why the Punisher and Daredevil are going head-to-head this time.

Daredevil Punisher 1

“It’s a Daredevil-centric story, and we see it through his P.O.V., but that doesn’t mean the Punisher is the ‘villain,’” Soule said. “The main story here is that Matt Murdock is trying to get a certain individual–a Russian mob boss–to a spot where he can stand trial for his crimes. The Punisher feels that it would be so much simpler if the mob boss never got there. He wants to cut out the middleman, basically. Murdock, however, is very much a part of the system, especially since he’s a prosecutor these days. He wants to make sure that justice comes from the justice system, and this guy gets a fair trial. So, conflict!”

The wildcard in this story is Blindspot (a.k.a. Samuel Chung), Daredevil’s new partner, who could tip the scales of justice in their favor. But the Punisher has outmaneuvered several veteran superheroes in the past, which means that Daredevil’s perceived advantage may not hold up for very long.

Marvel is clearly using this project to feed off of the excitement for the upcoming second season of Daredevil, which will pit the Punisher vs. the Man Without Fear in live-action for the very first time. The Daredevil/Punisher miniseries will be available digitally in March, before a print edition hits in April.
