Celebrate Jack Kirby’s Life with Kirby4Heroes and The Hero Initiative

Jack Kirby was one of the most influential comic book artists of all time, and one of the co-founders of the Marvel Universe as we know it. Captain America, the X-Men, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and several other comic book icons were co-created by Kirby and he left behind an unmatched legacy when he passed away in 1994.

August 28 would have been Kirby’s 98th birthday. To mark the occasion, Kirby’s granddaughter, Jillian Kirby, is once again organizing Kirby4Heroes to raise money for the Hero Initiative – a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping comic book professionals in hard times who need medical or financial assistance.

In 2012, Kirby4Heroes raised $5,000 for the Hero Initiative, before doubling that amount in 2013 with $10,000, and topping the total again in 2014 with $15,000. This year, Kirby’s goal is to raise $20,000 through Kirby4Heroes.

For this year’s Kirby4Heroes, several comic book stores are throwing Kirby-themed parties and events. Artist Phil Hester is also looking to top his contribution to the cause. Last year, Hester created 97 pieces of original artwork that were sold in support of Kirby4Heroes. This year, Hester is honoring “The King” with 98 original pieces!

In the video above, Jillian Kirby shares what her grandfather’s legacy has meant to her, and the genesis of her Kirby4Heroes. She also explains the Wake Up and Draw! event, and how professional comic book artists will pay homage to Jack Kirby while raising money in his name.
