CBS Wants Ethan Hawke For TRAINING DAY TV Series

Fifteen years ago, Ethan Hawke’s rookie cop Jake Hoyt received the education of a lifetime in Training Day. Now, CBS wants Hawke to pick up his badge again in the Training Day TV series.

CBS has reportedly put out an offer to Hawke to reprise his role as Hoyt on a recurring basis. Apparently, the network initially approached Hawke about starring in the series, with his character becoming the new corrupt cop who is paired with Kyle, an idealistic African-American rookie police officer. That would have been intriguing, but Hawke was said to be uninterested in making that kind of commitment to the potential series.

According to the new reports, Hawke’s role would be slightly different. Hoyt will now be the Deputy Chief of the LAPD. The new corrupt cop is a character named Frank, a Caucasian detective who runs an elite squad of the LAPD. In the series, Kyle is going undercover to bring down Frank at Hoyt’s request.

Bringing in an original star from the movie is one of CBS’ signature tricks when adapting films for television. Eddie Murphy was slated to possibly recur on the Beverly Hills Cop TV series that was ultimately passed on. CBS has found more success with its Limitless adaptation, which features Bradley Cooper as an executive producer and an occasional guest star.

The biggest issue for Hawke may be the fact that he’s still in demand for film roles, which could potentially limit his availability. But the Training Day TV series has something that most television adaptations lack: the director of the original film, Antoine Fuqua, who is producing the series and he will direct the pilot episode.
