When Greg Berlanti announced plans to take an iteration of Supergirl out to the networks, it seemed inevitable that the series would land at The CW alongside Arrow and The Flash. However, in a surprising turn, the adaptation went to the networkâs parent company, CBS, which currently doesnât have a comic-book adaptation to speak of on their slate. Since then, the big question has been, whoâs going to play the famed hero? Well, thanks to TV Line, we now have our answer.
According to the outlet, Gleeâs Melissa Benoist has been set as the seriesâ lead, marking the second time a Glee alum has been cast as a DC character. (Grant Gustin, aka The Flash‘s lead, Barry Allen, had a turn on Glee as well.) As per TV Line, the log line for the series reads as follows: âKara Zor-El escaped her home planet of Krypton amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she has concealed the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now, at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.â
What has us intrigued is the line âshe has concealed the powers she shares with her famous cousin.â While thereâs been no indication of Superman making an appearance in the series, Â this line does leave the possibility open for such an appearance. Of course that would open up a whole other can of worms as DC and Warner Bros. have been adamant about keeping its big and small screen worlds separate â even going so far as to keep shows appearing on different networks separate from one another. If Superman were to appear on Supergirl, itâs doubtful it would be the Henry Cavill version.
TV Lineâs report goes on to state roles that still need to be filled include Karaâs foster sister, Alex; Cat Grant, CEO of CatCo; CatCo colleagues James Olsen and Wynn Schott and Hank Henshaw, the director of the the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations).
What do you think of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl? Let us know in the comments below.
It might be interesting if they had appearance by Clark Kent but not Superman.
I don’t know if she’s any good of an actor, but bleach the hair, and she certainly looks the part.
She was one of the only new kids I liked on glee so that’s something. I’ll wait and see.
There is a reason she was only on one season of Glee. She wasn’t even good on that train wreck, how is she going to carry an entire show?
I didn’t like Grant Gustin on Glee either, but he’s absolutely killing it as the Flash. Give her a chance.
Not thrilled.
