Cate Blanchett in Talks for THOR: RAGNAROK

We all knew it was probably only a matter of time before she did a superhero movie, and it seems that day has arrived — Variety is reporting that Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett is close to joining the cast of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Although no stranger to sc-fi and fantasy movies, having played Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, this would be the first time that Blanchett has appeared in a superhero movie. There were rumors recently that the actress, fresh off of Golden Globe nominations for her role in Carol, was being eyed to play a part in Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman film, but she ultimately passed.

The question of course remains: Just who would Blanchett be playing? There have been several rumors that Thor: Ragnarok was going to include three new female characters from the Thor comics. First off, there’s Thor’s nemesis the Enchantress (a part that Cate Blanchett would absolutely nail, as it’s a mix of Galadriel and the wicked stepmother in Cinderella). Then there’s Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death, who is the ruler of Hel and Niflheim, and who has amazing headgear. Finally, there’s the heroic Valkyrie, although she is said to have a somewhat smaller role, and probably not big enough for an actress the caliber of Ms. Blanchett.

Taika Waititi, who recently directed the hilarious mockumentary vampire movie What We Do In The Shadows, is on board to direct Ragnarok, with of course Chris Hemsworth returning to play the God of Thunder. Although not announced officially, Tom Hiddleston is bound to return as Loki, given where the last movie left off. Mark Ruffalo is joining the Asgardians as the Hulk. Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to hit theaters on November 3, 2017 (in the US).
