Cary Fukunaga, the director who brought season one of HBO’s smash hit True Detective to life earlier this year, has teamed up with John Legend to direct the feature film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning “The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, And The Real Count of Monte Cristo,” Deadline is reporting.

The biography, written by Tom Reiss, tells the story of General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s favorite generals. Dumas’s son was famed novelist Alexandre Dumas, best known for writing “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “The Three Musketeers,” both of which were said to be based on his father whose military career saw him achieve the highest ranking military status that a person of color ever has in a European army.

Michael De Luca, who is spearheading the project for Sony, told Deadline, “Cary’s exceptional talent as a writer/director will bring to life all of the action and drama that have made ‘The Black Count’ such a compelling read.”

While it would appear that Fukunaga is best known now for his work on True Detective, before he directed season one of the series his most recent directorial effort was a feature film version of Jane Eyre, an Academy Award nominated period piece. It sounds like The Black Count will make good use of the wide range directorial skills that Fukunaga brings to the table.

The Black Count will be Fukunaga’s next after directing Beasts of No Nation with Idris Elba.
