Carrie Fisher Gives the Best THE FORCE AWAKENS Interview Yet

One of the best things about the constant Star Wars: The Force Awakens promotional juggernaut going on right now is that it’s given the great Carrie Fisher a chance to spread her acerbic wit and considerable wisdom on the unsuspecting talk show circuit. We all know Fisher as an icon because of her role as Princess (soon to be General) Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, but aside from that, and her career as a notable script doctor and author, she’s also the subject of her one-woman autobiographical stage show, Wishful Drinking. It’s in that show that Fisher showed she might have missed her true calling as a stand-up comic.

Fisher’s Wishful Drinking wit and comic timing were on full display on this past week’s Good Morning America, where she appeared with her dog, Gary, who Fisher explains “is very famous on Twitter.” Essentially there to promote The Force Awakens, the subject came up—rather quickly—about the fact that Fisher was asked to lose weight for the role (something that was also asked of her co-star Mark Hamill by the producers, but no one really cares about asking male actors about their weight.) She responded with “I think this is a stupid conversation”, but indulged the question anyway… but not without throwing the appropriate amount of shade first.

Good Morning America then pulled out the tired talk show trope of trying to embarrass their guest with an ancient clip of themselves in their younger days, despite the fact that Carrie Fisher has said she doesn’t like watching footage of herself. In this instance, it was Fisher’s original Star Wars audition tape from back in 1975. However, Fisher quickly added “who doesn’t like watching themselves at 19?” Before telling interviewer Amy Robach “you’ll like it less as you go along.” Ouch.

As for Fisher’s opinions of the actual upcoming film, which she’s actually already seen? “It’s really good” she said. “And I think in my mouth, so I don’t lie.” And that, Carrie Fisher, is why we love you. You can watch the entire six-minute interview above.
