Over the past few months, TV Girl have become Nerdist regulars: After scoring a spot on Music Geek Track of the Day and premiering their music video for “Birds Don’t Sing”, the band was kind enough to contribute their own edition of Car Tunes and Cartoons.
TV Girl have a sound that is decidedly “summer-bummer”. Though the group presents seemingly bright and emollient sonic textures, their lyrics explore the darker corners of memory and nostalgia. The result is a disarming, thought-provoking pop sound that probes expectations about how you can interface with your own memories, if you are lucky enough to remember them at all. What happens to a bad memory if there are also positive associations within that recollection and vice versa?
Both TV Girl’s illustration and mix interface with that frustratingly complex idea of nostalgia. Sure you can look at something and see it, or listen to it and hear it. But when you ineluctably begin to make associations, does that necessarily imbue the source material with the correct meaning or context? A lot of the tracks TV Girl selected are songs I remember hearing throughout this year and, though 2014 is still going strong, make me feel like I am approaching a new era. Ultimately this excellent mix gives me that weird sensation of longing for something that hasn’t happened yet, and that is awesome. I hope you guys enjoy.
