Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe starts about as big as in can with Captain America: Civil War. Adapted from the 2006-2007 comic event, this film revolves around the government control of super-powered individuals. While the exact circumstances differ from page to screen, the rift between Iron Man and Captain America is still there. Nothing makes that more apparent than the new cover from Empire magazine.
Pretty cool looking, huh? Oh, and if you happen to be getting a strange case of deja vu, you are NOT going crazy. Empire’s cover is an homage to issue seven of the comic book, which you can check out below.
It’s a very good facsimile, down to the sparks of Tony’s repulsor rays bouncing off Cap’s shield. While the Empire version looks to be more specifically for the cover, I hope that if there IS a film version of this scene, that Tony and Cap look as ragged as their comic counterparts. If they are both fighting for what they believe is right, there should be some battle scars. No matter what, if the comic version was any indication, this film will have some long lasting repercussions for the MCU going forward.
Captain America: Civil War, starring Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr., opens in theaters on May 6.
So what do you think? Are you now even more excited for Captain America: Civil War? What other homages to the comic do you want to make it into the film? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.
