It’s officially official. Captain America: Civil War (the third Captain America film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) has begun principal photography. Shooting at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta and on location in Germany, Puerto Rico, and Iceland, the film will pick up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off. As many fans guessed, the team we saw at the end of Age of Ultron is the new Avengers–that’s Vision, War Machine, Falcon, and Scarlet Witch. Steve Rogers is leading them, and that means a rather sizable roster of familiar names will appear in Civil War. The influx of heroes isn’t a huge surprise given what happens in the Marvel Comics’ Civil War event that’s inspiring the movie, but I am curious to see how they’ll center the plot on Cap and not make it another Avengers movie.
Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are set to direct the screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Let’s take a look at the all-star lineup. Besides Chris Evans as Captain America, we’ll see:
Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man
Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier
Anthony Mackie as Falcon
Paul Bettany as The Vision
Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
Don Cheadle as War Machine
Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch
Paul Rudd as Ant-Man (this will be his first appearance with the Avengers)
Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther
Emily VanCamp as Agent 13
Daniel Brühl in an unnamed role (however, Brühl has said he’s playing Baron Zemo)
Frank Grillo as Crossbones
William Hurt as General Thaddeus Ross
Martin Freeman in an unnamed role
Whew. How about that? That confirms some suspicions and sort of boggles the mind. Marvel and Disney probably still have some secrets under their hat so I imagine this isn’t a complete listing of all the faces we’ll see. Spider-Man will likely join the list once he’s been cast.
And the official synopsis?
“After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.”
In the comics, the system was a Superhero Registration Act that ripped the hero community apart. Yikes.
