CIVIL WAR Almost Featured Hank Pym and The Wasp

Captain America: Civil War has one of the biggest lineup of Marvel heroes to date, and it could have been even bigger! Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously indicated that Hope van Dyne almost made her debut as the Wasp in Civil War, but apparently she wouldn’t have been alone.

While speaking with Mashable, Civil War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that Hope’s father, Hank Pym was also in early drafts of the movie. “There was one not very good draft where Hank Pym shows up,” said Markus. McFeely added that they “won’t speculate on what Hank Pym did, but he wasn’t as helpful as he needed to be.”

During Ant-Man, Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym was openly distrustful of Tony Stark and the Avengers. That tension was even briefly mentioned in Civil War during one of Paul Rudd’s scenes as Ant-Man/Scott Lang.

As for Evangeline Lilly’s Hope, Markus and McFeely echoed Feige’s sentiment that rushing her debut as the Wasp wouldn’t have given the moment the dramatic weight that it needs. The duo also indicated that the Wasp and her father were only featured in the drafts before Spider-Man was firmly added to the movie’s lineup.

The upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp movie will feature Hope’s first time in costume, and it will presumably follow up on Scott Lang’s post-Civil War status. There are spoilers ahead for Civil War! You’ve been warned! During the film, Scott was one of the heroes captured by Tony Stark’s side, which means that his secret identity as Ant-Man has been blown. It’s currently unknown if Scott will be a fugitive when Ant-Man and the Wasp is released on July 6, 2018.
