Capt. Jack Harkness Returns in New Series of TORCHWOOD Audio Plays

It’s been nearly four full years since Jack Harkness and crew fought against the weirds of aliens and stuff as part of televised Torchwood. And, while it was nice to see those characters again, I think most of us can agree that Starz’s Miracle Day certainly didn’t live up to the promise of Children of Earth at all. We’ve been wondering when/if the Doctor Who spinoff would ever return, seeing as its star, John Barrowman, has taken up residency as a full series regular on the CW’s Arrow. But fear not, because even though your eyes not be able to see new Torchwood, your ears soon will.

It was announced on Sunday that Torchwood will be returning in a series of six fully-produced audio dramas from Big Finish, the company who’s been making new classic Doctor Who audios and spinoffs for close to 20 years. The company, which has in the past had a license for classic series characters and settings only, issued a press release explaining that they’ve reached an agreement with the BBC for audio rights to the spinoff, created by Russell T. Davies in 2006. Davies was quoted as saying “Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it’s finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish.”

The bigger news? John Barrowman himself will be back to voice the immortal (although, technically, perpetual resurrection isn’t immortality) complicated, time-traveling, omnisexual hero, Captain Jack Harkness, for the first of the six adventures. Each of the six will focus on a different member of the Torchwood team, with Harkness’ outing, “The Conspiracy,” written by David Llewellyn, coming out September 2015 and the remaining five premiering monthly from January 2016. No word yet as to which characters will be in the rest of the episodes, nor what the stories will be called.
