CALVIN AND HOBBES Come to Life in LEGO

Calvin and Hobbes is timeless. The comic strip by Bill Watterson started its run in 1985, but the story about a boy and his stuffed tiger could have taken place yesterday. You’ve probably read at least one Calvin and Hobbes strip regardless of your age, and if you haven’t, I recommend doing so. Calvin’s imagination and the wild adventures he went on with Hobbes are entertaining, humorous, and often touching – but not in an overly cheesy way. The duo has inspired people to make all kinds of tributes, and more than a few of those take the form of LEGO bricks. I can’t think of a better medium to capture the essence of Calvin and Hobbes.

The awesome build pictured above references one of the iconic images of Calvin and Hobbes. Simon Liu of The Brothers Brick put together Hobbes, and Evan constructed Calvin. They used Skype to discuss the project since they don’t live in the same city and used Lego Digital Designer software to design parts of the build. Isn’t technology neat? They assembled the tangible bit of nostalgia in a week. While it’s not made from bajillions of bricks, it’s charming and captures the playfulness of the boy and tiger.

And because this is the internet, that’s not the only LEGO representation of the comic out there. I spotted this diorama by Tyler Sky at The Brothers Brick. It features Calvin and Hobbes in the middle of a fierce snow battle. Maybe I’d like winter more if I approached it like these guys do.

One more for the road! These sculptures were designed and built by Bernard Obes. Even though they’re made of LEGO bricks with sharp corners, these version of Calvin and Hobbes look huggable.
