Into This Generation, A BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot Is Born

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is heading back to the small screen! Variety is reporting a rebooted Buffy television series is officially in development with Joss Whedon back at the helm as executive producer and veteran writer Monica Owusu-Breen handling writing duties and showrunning.

Owusu-Breen is no stranger to the supernatural, having penned scripts before for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Charmed, and Fringe; she served as showrunner on Midnight, Texas for its first season. Details are sparse on when or how the reboot will take place, but Owusu-Breen is reportedly writing the title role with a black actress in mind. The producers told Deadline, “Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.”

Whedon’s involvement has only been announced as executive producer so far; he’s currently developing another new series for HBO, called The Nevers, where he’ll be the writer, director, and showrunner.

With no television network or streaming service attached to the show quite yet, a lot is still unknown about the rebooted series, but a bidding war is expected for the rights to bring the slayer back to Sunnydale.

The original 1996 Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series itself was a reboot of the 1992 film written by Whedon. Does that make this return to television a re-reboot? No matter how many times the slayer’s story is retold, we hope it includes snarling vampires, quirky humor, a little bit of glorious campiness, and a Chosen One to save the world. A lot.

Will you tune into a Buffy reboot, or prefer the series stays in the grave? Tell us why in the comments.
