Bryan Fuller Says AMERICAN GODS is Developing a ‘Marvel Universe with Deities’

Hannibal may be over, but Bryan Fuller’s upcoming TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods novel is ramping up for production with Fuller and other writers from the series already plotting out the first season. And while American Gods is only a single novel with one spinoff, Fuller and company have ambitious plans to expand the narrative.

While speaking with CraveOnline, Fuller said that they’re looking at “developing a Marvel Universe, not with superheroes but with gods. As detailed and integrated as the Marvel Universe is, and doing that with deities is something that excited all of us.” The prolific showrunner went on to tease meetings between multiple Jesus Christs from different cultures within the American Gods universe. However, Fuller noted that Starz does not have the rights for Gaiman’s Anansi Boys—the lone spinoff from American Gods—“but we’re hoping that we will eventually.”

Not one to let a good rumor gain ground, Fuller also addressed the rumor that Steven Spielberg is not involved with NBC’s remake of Amazing Stories, adding that “I have had three meetings on Amazing Stories, two of them with Steven Spielberg. … I’ve pitched him ten stories for episodes and he has approved five of them, and no story moves forward without Mr. Spielberg’s approval.”
