Bruce Campbell has been playing Ash Williams on and off for the last 35 years, so it’s understandable why some people may confuse the actor with his iconic Evil Dead hero. Ahead of the second season premiere of Ash vs. Evil Dead, Campbell played on that perception by starring in a short video, directed by Nerdist’s own Andrew Bowser, about the dangers of having a chainsaw hand.
Funny or Die debuted the video, and it’s important to note that Campbell was not playing Ash in it. Instead, he played a fictional version of himself with his dickish qualities dialed up past 11. Whereas Ash would have worn his fake hand during social situations, the Campbell of this video wears the instrument of destruction at all times…and he doesn’t seem to be all that bothered by the way he casually maims people and animals.
One of the funnier recurring gags is the way that Campbell refuses to drop his drink under any circumstances. And because any Campbell is essentially part Ash, he does get a chance to show off his Deadite killing skills before winning over the Deadite’s girlfriend. Of course you can’t go around chainsawing people without making a few enemies. The unlucky barista who lost his hand to Campbell’s chainsaw even went full supervillain by the end, but he’s not exactly a threat.
Ash vs. Evil Dead season 2 will premiere this Sunday, October 2 on Starz, where Campbell’s title character will put his chainsaw hand to good use in every episode.
