In the early â90s, Mentos forever solidified itself in pop-culture with their humorous commercials all set to the same catchy tune. No one can hear the words, âDoo doo doo doo, doo-doo, do-Wah!â without thinking about the chewy mints.
It seemed you couldnât turn on the TV without hearing the bouncy jingle and seeing a Mentos ad. The commercials were always the same, someone finds themselves in a precarious position to the point of absurdity, all set to the soundtrack of the happy tune. In the end, theyâd hold up a pack of Mentos to victory.
Some genius decided that footage from the classic 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme film Bloodsport would be an ideal Mentos parody and boy, were they right. As Van Damme sprints through Hong Kong, the jaunty jingle makes the once serious scene come alive with boisterous entertainment.
Van-Damme jogging in a yellow blazer? Check. Stopping to mock the people pursuing him? Double check. Buffoons ineptly falling into water? You bet! This faux- commercial has it all…almost. The only thing missing from this fantastic video is Jean-Claude Van Damme doing his renown splits. I mean, there are two junk boats right there! Talk about a missed opportunity.
In the end Van Damme gets away and it certainly leads me to believe that Frank Dux will be enjoying a roll of strawberry Mentos right before the Kumite.
