Blizzard Surprises Fans With New Update for DIABLO II

Diablo III was a huge success by all accounts. The community loved it, and Blizzard has of course done a great job of updating the game with new content since its original launch back in 2012. But that doesn’t mean the team has forgotten about previous installments in the Diablo series. That’s right, Blizzard has just released update 1.14a for Diablo II, which adds a new Mac installer for OS X and also fixes bugs introduced by new hardware.

The last time this dungeon-crawler got an update — the game has been around for almost 16 years — was back in 2011. That’s how you support a game past its release. It doesn’t end there, though. Blizzard also stated that the team is working on their cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities.

Interestingly enough, the publisher/developer also states that making the game run on new hardware is just the beginning. What could this mean? Your guess is as good as mine.

The patch is out of the blue, but it does at least suggest there is an audience still playing the older installments. This shouldn’t surprise us, as the community for this franchise has always been pretty dedicated.

Do you guys still play Diablo II? Does this surprise you as much as it does us? Will you be returning to play it on your Mac hardware now that a new shiny installer is available? And what’s with the cryptic statement from Blizzard? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
