Listen to Selections from BLADE RUNNER 2049’s Soundtrack

In 1982, director Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner made a seismic impact on sci-fi films with an influence that is still felt to this day. It was a groundbreaking film, and so too was the score by Vangelis. Using synthesisers and traditional instruments, Vangelis created a soundtrack that was just as unforgettable as the film it was made for. This weekend, Blade Runner 2049 brought the franchise back to theaters with a score by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch. And now you can sample their new creation before or after you see the movie.

Via Collider, Apple Music has posted an extended preview of the Blade Runner 2049 score, with selections from each track. It’s not the full score, sadly, but it is some genuinely great music that compares well to Vangelis’ score for the first film. While the new soundtrack does sample some of Vangelis’ themes from the first Blade Runner, it also goes down its own paths while evoking the emotional journey of the film. It’s not too surprising, considering that Zimmer is already a legend among film composers. Wallfisch doesn’t quite have as many scores as Zimmer to his credit, but he’s had a busy 2017 with the soundtracks for A Cure For Wellness, Hidden Figures, and Stephen King’s It.

Jóhann Jóhannsson was originally attached to write the score for Blade Runner 2049, and he’s previously created some beautiful music for Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival. We’d be very curious to hear his take on this soundtrack, but we’re also very happy with the way that it came out.
