Earlier this month Black Panther, a smash hit at box offices around the world, made history by becoming the first superhero movie to ever be nominated for Best Picture by the Academy Awards. It remains to be seen if it will take home the big prize at the Oscars, but the film has already earned one major accolade during this year’s award season: the SAG for Best Ensemble. Ryan Coogler’s industry-changing film about the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda won the Screen Actor’s Guild’s Outstanding Performance by a Cast, which officially included 12 members of the film. It beat out A Star Is Born, Crazy Rich Asians, BlacKkKlansman, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Leading man Chadwick Boseman accepted the trophy on behalf of his co-stars and talked about the film’s cultural significance and its importance for black actors.
That was a great speech, so it’s really fortunate Michael B. Jordan didn’t follow his character’s lead and try to usurp Boseman during. The movie also took home the SAG for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture, showing just how much talent was featured in the film.
Just like with the Golden Globes, it’s natural to try and look at the SAG Awards as an indicator of who and what might take home Oscars this year, but without any Oscar equivalent to Best Ensemble there’s likely not much to glean from this result. But it does confirm what we already knew: Black Panther is loaded with talent.
